There's been a lot of snow this winter. A lot might even be an understatement, but I'm not going to complain about an impromptu week off of school! However, some people have taken advantage of this incredibly cold winter, one being Nele Azevedo of Brazil. She used the crazy weather to her advantage: to create an amazing installation piece and make an incredible statement.
This piece, known as the "Melting Man", consisted of 5,000 small ice sculptures placed on the steps of Chamberlain Square in Birmingham, UK, meant to honor the victims of WWI, civilians and soldiers all included. As the day progressed, and the heat increased, the small, delicate figures slowly began to melt into warped shapes and small puddles, creating a haunting and almost ghostly image on the Chamberlain Square steps. One by one, these small sculptures began to disappear, creating a eerie connection to the lives lost during World War I. To even further create a haunting feeling in this installation, Azevedo created one singular ice figure to crown them all, however this figure was frozen from a dark red material, therefore creating the illusion of trickling blood as it began to melt down the steps of the square.
