First of all, can I just say how excited I am for the Richmond ICA? 2017 come faster!
This is just one example of the amazing architecture in my beautiful city. To be perfectly honest, I'd never really though that much about architecture as art, or really architecture in general, but after hearing many architects in Richmond talk about their jobs, I realized just how passionate these people are about creating beautiful, resourceful buildings for the people of Richmond to enjoy. Architecture seems like the perfect job for someone equally as passionate about math as they are about art, and although judging by my recent report card, maybe the math part isn't for me (I went to math tutoring today just in case anyone is wondering, just because it's not my top skill doesn't mean I can't get better!) but the design element to architecture is so beautiful and interesting!
When you first think of a "building", you probably think of a house, or possibly an office building or strip mall. I know I do at least! However, there are so many more things you can do with buildings, and so many more directions you can take it rather than a square with 4 windows and a door. Look at the ICA for example, that building is a work of art in itself! Other architects have taken unique approaches to creating new buildings as well, for example, Ai Wei Wei contributed to the design of the 2012 Beijing "Birds Nest", the nickname given to the Olympic Stadium because of its woven-like appearance.

Although this is not in RVA, it's just another example of how architecture can go in so many different directions, and create incredibly beautiful things. What's even more fascinating about architecture is the amount of planning that goes into every single detail, the size of the windows, the direction the building should face, the height of the ceilings, EVERYTHING! Architects have more work to do than simply design a building, they have to design a FUNCTIONAL building. The architects who came to visit us described an architects process in 4 simple steps:
1. Help people DEFINE the problem.
2. EXPLORE colors, designs, etc.
3. GENERATE design and layout.
4. TEST your design.
Overall, I definitely don't think architecture is for me, but I am definitely fascinated by the process and meticulous steps it takes to create a truly incredible building. I have gained a new appreciation each time I walk into a new building now, and can understand just how much thought went into each element!
