I currently have oil paint on all 5 pairs of overalls that I own.
Oil painting is a MESS! Unlike acrylics, the paint takes so long to dry, sometimes even hours with certain colors like cadmium red and cadmium yellow, and I'm still getting used to it! Throughout this process, I've been learning to rely less on the "fingerpainting" technique I so often utilize, and have had to rely solely on brushstrokes and a steady hand! Although it's been a challenge, looking at my painting slowly coming along has been a visual reminder of how much improvement I've been making.
Speaking of improvement, looking at the photos above, you can definitely see the progress I've been making! Fun fact: this painting is 8x10 inches, and the still unfinished version on the right has taken multiple hours! It gives me a new adoration for the artists who create gigantic works of art, all oil painted and with such precision. The amount of attention to detail and PATIENCE those artists have just blow my mind! However, I myself have had to focus on patience and precision with this small canvas, paying attention to every fold in the doll's dress, every wrinkle in the fabric skin, and every shadow cast from the individual pages of the book. Though it's tedious, taking the time to focus on small details makes me look at other things differently too, as I have begun to notice just how light falls on the ways as compared to shadows, the small tinges of pink on white walls, and the tiny freckles on one's skin among other things!
I hope I can (somewhat) finish this project! Though in relation to the rest of my class I'm "ahead" in the process, I almost feel as if this painting could never be done, as there are always more things to notice!
