Semi-Nude Woman
Etching, 1656-1657
Can we just talk about how beautiful this etching is? I'm so happy I picked Salvator Rosa as my artistic inspiration for my Old Master drawing, his detail and skill absolutely blow me away. Rosa is a less known Old Master, which I found intriguing, and after doing some research on him and his work I knew he had to be the one I picked. He is known for his paintings, most of which are dark and serene with an almost Baroque feel, but what really fascinated me were his etchings. As compared to his paintings, the etchings I found were so full of life; so detailed and lively and relatable that I could hardly believe they were by the same person. The etching I chose to portray in my Old Master drawing, "Semi-Nude Woman" was my personal favorite of the etchings I found. I love the draping of the fabric, the crazy spirals of her hair, and the way her head is tilted to the side, I knew it was going to be a challenge but I just couldn't resist!
So far I've made less progress then I probably would have liked to on my Old Master drawing, but I'm going to go into crunch-mode next class and really get a lot accomplished if I can. I'm planning on doing my copy in pen and ink with a yellow tint; I'm hoping to kind of mimic the feel of the original background of this etching. I will definitely try and upload some photos of my progress as soon as I can, I want everyone to be able to see how it's turning out! I can't wait to see myself!
