Art 3 has opened me up to so many things I know I never would have had the opportunity to try without it. Oil painting, sculpture, plaster casting, what we're doing in a junior year art class is equivalent to the resources and tools COLLEGE students get to use and I'm so grateful! The class has helped me really understand my skills as an artist, and has even helped me branch them out! Who would have known 9 months ago that I would be covering a sculpture entirely in seeds, or drawing a realistic pen and ink portrait, or oil painting! I've learned so much about different media and materials simply from using them for the first time, but also through a whole year of making art, I've acquired skills such as knowledge of composition, color theory, and symbolism of artwork from practicing throughout the year (as well as some trial and error to say the least!) I've seen my most specific growth in something that might seem somewhat random, but the skill I've acquired the most of this year is bravery! I've learned from my many experiments with art this year that I am capable of making anything I put my mind to, and although not everything will turn out exactly as planned, it is still exciting and beautiful to just try new things and branch out. I've done some really crazy stuff this year, and honestly I'm really proud of it all! Next year, I plan on going even more crazy, I mean why not?
However, of course there are some important skills and techniques that I can continue to work on. My figure drawing could use some work, I am definitely no Da Vinci yet! I've been getting better at figure drawing over the year, and have been practicing in my sketchbook, but another thing I've been working on is value of figures in order to help them appear realistic. As Coach constantly reiterates, "real life does not have any lines", and I have been trying to emphasize that prospect in my drawings. Rather than using lines to create a figure drawing, I have been working on forming the image from hues and values, coming together to form a truly beautiful image. I hope to continue practicing this over the summer (and for the rest of my life really), because figure drawing is something I feel I can always improve on! I'm proud of my improvement over the year, but there is always more I can do! Similarly, I plan to continue working on some of the techniques we learned this year that I do not have as much experience with, such as sculpture and abstract painting! I loved both and hope to practice them more!
I'm incredibly proud of my growth over the past year in art, and I can't wait to see how much change I can make next year too! The ability to experiment with new media and techniques really opened my eyes to new things I want to try in my independent work next year, such as BIG paintings and lots of color, but also more abstract work and possibly some 3D art! I want to say thanks to Coach for really just letting me be myself this year, create things that made me happy and really love and look forward to art every day! I am so excited to be able to utilize the skills I have gained this year in my work next year, and for the rest of my life; I don't plan to stop making art anytime soon! By continuing to practice basic skills such as composition, figure drawing, and value, as well as utilizing new techniques, I believe I can create some truly beautiful work next year.
